Human-Crocodile Conflicts in Sarawak, Malaysian Borneo: An analysis of crocodile attacks from 2000 until 2020

Crocodiles have caused a relatively high number of fatalities towards local people in Sarawak, Malaysian state Borneo. However, they important cultural values and are well respected by the riverine communities state. The objective this study is to determine patterns human-crocodile conflict Sarawak which could help managing problems between crocodile human. Information on attacks were collected from multiple sources including records kept authority, media or CrocBITE database. Over 21 years period (year 2000-2020), record (n=164) showed balance fatal non-fatal cases. Most common victims male (86.6%) adults age 31 40 old (20.7%). occurred more during daylight (59.4%), with peak time for was approximately 1800 2359 hours (33.3%). Crocodile occur slightly wet season, October March (54.0%), highest one recorded (16.8%). Fishing (26.2%) bathing (22.0%) rivers possess risk attack, suggesting that crocodiles likely attack when victim water. findings imply crocodiles' pattern associated people’s activities pattern. There need update database -real basis as will facilitate relevant agencies formulating strategies reduce ensuring safety communities.
